Reminiscent of the good old Sunday afternoons...
Vicious circle of promise
Nothing is more permanent, on average, than being promising on the cusp of greatness. A glamorous vicious circle?
The inhibition to interfere with the promise is often too great. Sometimes it can be pure inertia, sometimes the fear of appearing foolish. But if the promise is strong enough, you rise anyway. Maybe not, the weight of expectations often is heavier than the thrust of promise.
It has to be the single most talked about and written subject in sports. People love to read about how promises fail. It sells like hot cake. 30 for 30 by ESPN. I guess more documentaries are made about it than success stories or maybe it is just more powerful or may be sad stories are just easier to narrate.
Arsenal fan.
The same is often true for businesses. Nothing can be more growth stunting idea than the belief that we are promising and on the verge of greatness. The general wisdom says no fucking with promise. And you are taught not to fuck with wisdom.
